England-Algeria preview

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The tussle for the top two spots in 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Group C will intensify when England take to the field against Algeria on Friday. For Fabio Capello’s men, the mission will be to put their underwhelming draw against USA behind them, while their opponents need to bounce back from their loss to Slovenia knowing that a second successive setback would spell the end of their qualification hopes.

The match
England-Algeria, Group C, Cape Town, Friday 18 June, 20.30 (local time)
The Three Lions let two precious points slip between their fingers when they kicked off their bid against the United States. Overall, they looked short of ideas going forward, but that could all change with the return of Gareth Barry from an ankle injury, the midfielder’s presence allowing Steven Gerrard to get further forward after spending most of England’s opener chasing the ball. Despite Barry’s return, the spectre of fitness worries nonetheless continues to hang over the squad, with centre-back Ledley King a doubt for the rest of the tournament after suffering a serious groin complaint against the Stars and Stripes.

At the other end of the pitch, Algeria will be anxious to give a more convincing account of themselves than they managed against Slovenia, although they will have to cope without forward Abdelkader Ghezzal after he saw red in that game. Coach Rabah Saadane could turn to Rafik Saifi to fill the void, with the striker seemingly fit again following the ankle injury he picked up during his late substitute cameo last time out. Above all, Les Fennecs will hope for a sterling showing from their defensive quartet of Madjid Bougherra, Anther Yahia, Rafik Halliche and Nadir Belhadj, who all boast experience in Europe. Belhadj will be particularly familiar with the England line-up, having spent the last two seasons with Portsmouth.

Players to watch
Steven Gerrard v Karim Ziani
The battle for midfield mastery ought to be an enthralling contest, with England captain Gerrard coming up against Algeria’s beating heart in Ziani. The former will look to demonstrate his quality as he did when he opened the scoring early on against the United States, while Ziani will be focused on helping his team-mates spring a surprise and claw their way back into the qualification equation. The Wolfsburg man already boasts the upper hand over his Liverpool counterpart in terms of completed passes, having picked out a colleague 70 per cent of the time compared to Gerrard’s 59 per cent success rate.

The stat
2 – The number of goals England have conceded in five matches against African teams at the FIFA World Cup. Cameroon fired both those efforts in a memorable quarter-final at Italy 1990, making them the only side from Africa to have found the net against the Three Lions on the global stage. Cameroon nonetheless lost that encounter, with England’s record from the five matches reading three wins and two draws.

What they said
“We have a lot of players who can score goals, but for us to get a better result I’ll need to play better than I did last time and score. I don’t feel any pressure because the team are playing well,” Wayne Rooney, England striker.

“We have several talented players who can make things happen. We’re going to pose the England team plenty of problems and we’ll be more ambitious than we were against Slovenia. It’s a role that suits us well.” Anther Yahia, Algeria defender and captain

The question
Algeria’s only FIFA World Cup strike against a side from the United Kingdom came against Northern Ireland at Mexico 1986. Will the Desert Foxes be able to get their first goal of the tournament and become only the second African team to register against England?

Boudebouz ready to be unleashed on England

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Algerian captain Anther Yahia has called for his side to be more adventurous against England in their second 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Group C match on Friday – and the raw young talent of Ryad Boudebouz could provide the quality they are after. The 20-year-old has only 45 minutes of international experience, gained in friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and the United Arab Emirates, but is already being hailed as the rising star of the Algerian national side.

And with Algeria needing something special to recover from their opening 1-0 defeat by Slovenia, this could be the time for the French-born youngster to shine. “Ryad has fitted into the squad really well,” said team-mate Madjid Bougherra. “He is a talented player who represents the future of the national side. Whether he is a starter or a substitute, he brings this craziness, this nonchalance.”

His talent has also been appreciated by two former Algerian playing greats Lakhdar Belloumi and Salah Assad which has given him great pleasure. “It is very pleasing that everyone is counting on me,” said Boudebouz. “I must not disappoint them. If I come on, it is to add something to the team on the pitch. The coach (Rabah Saadane) has told me to go out and play my natural game.”

Boudebouz was courted strongly by the Algerians after he had played two full seasons for Sochaux, who he joined aged 12, and appeared at every youth level for France, before eventually pinning his colours to the Algerian mast. “When I enter a game, I try to bring movement and creativity into the attack,” he said. “Up till now, it has pretty much succeeded.”

Chaouchi doubt for England clash

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Algeria goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi is a doubt for Friday’s FIFA World Cup™ Group C match with England after sitting out training on Wednesday. The 25-year-old, whose mistake saw Slovenia claim a 1-0 win in their opening match on Sunday, sprained his left knee in Tuesday’s training session, said coach Rabah Saadane.

“The doctors told me that he is not a definite starter for the match,” said Saadane, who is at his second FIFA World Cup finals having coached the Algerians at the 1986 edition.

Should Chaouchi not make the match, he will be replaced by Rais M Bolhi, who plays his club football for Bulgarian outfit Slavia Sofia.

Early success key, says Yebda

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Hassan Yebda believes Algeria must win their opening 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ game against Slovenia if they want to maintain hope of an upset in Group C.

The Desert Hawks are outsiders in their section, with England and the United States heavily favoured to reach the second stage.

However, midfielder Yebda, who is contracted to Portuguese side Benfica but spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, is targeting a three-point start in Polokwane on Sunday.

“The first game is very, very important, if we can win it will be better for us.”

Hassan Yebda, Algeria midfielder

He said: “In football you never know. We will do our best and play the first game against Slovenia and try to win. The first game is very, very important, if we can win it will be better for us. Slovenia though have a good team.”

The 26-year-old is also expecting a tough encounter against the English – a side they face five days later in Cape Town.

He added: “I see them on TV. Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and John Terry are all very good players. It will be very difficult for us.”

Saadane heartened by final warm-up

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Rabah Saadane believes his Algeria team are a step closer to where they want to be for the FIFA World Cup™, but still plans to work on certain aspects of their game after their final warm-up match against United Arab Emirates yesterday.

The Desert Hawks, in the same group as England for the finals, won 1-0 thanks to a second-half penalty from Karim Ziani that ended a run of four consecutive losses.

Attention will now turn to their tournament opener against Group C rivals Slovenia in Polokwane next Sunday. Saadane, whose side were boosted by the return from injury of several players including defender Madjid Bougherra, said: “This game was a good test for us. It was very tough and a high level.

“It demonstrated the capabilities of the team, especially with the players returning from injury and took us a step closer to where we want to be. There was a lot of willingness on the part of players, who have given a great deal in these last few weeks.”

The coach also acknowledged there remains work to do if they are to challenge for a place in the knockout stages from a section that, in addition to England and Slovenia, also includes USA. He continued: “I must also stress that there were many positives and also negatives.

“Among the positives are the physicality of the players. We played an attacking game today to try and win, given our status as a World Cup team. There were many problems with ball retention. No one could keep the ball and I asked the players at half-time to improve on this and they did in the second half. There are still some problems in attack, where our finishing was lacking. Hopefully we’ll have this during the World Cup.”

Saadane was also relieved that his side came through the game without any further injury scares. He added: “Thanks to God there have been no injuries at the end of the game.”

Algeria earn narrow win

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Algeria ended a run of four consecutive losses with a much-needed victory over the United Arab Emirates in Germany in their final FIFA World Cup™ warm-up match.

Karim Ziani scored the only goal from the penalty spot for the Desert Foxes, who are in Group C alongside England, USA and Slovenia for the finals in South Africa.

Coach Rabah Saadane, under pressure to turn around their poor run, which had taken in a 3-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland in their most recent game, was boosted by the return of defender Madjid Bougherra in defence.

His side could have gone ahead after 17 minutes when Ziani’s dangerous cross almost picked out Rafik Djebbour, but he was slow to react and the chance went begging.

Just after the half-hour mark Abdelkader Ghezzal failed to find the target from close range and the sides went into the interval at 0-0.

UAE almost stunned their opponents after the restart when Ahmed Khalil nearly latched onto a long ball from midfield, but goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi raced of his line to avert the danger.

The deadlock was eventually broken at the other end after 49 minutes when Ziani converted from the penalty spot – the decision given after Khalid Sabil handled the ball in the box.

Despite having the better of the possession for the remainder of the game, the Algerians failed to grab a second but held on for the narrow win.

They will now hope to build on the result when they face Slovenia in their FIFA World Cup opener in Polokwane next Sunday.

The Algerians will then face the English, followed by the final pool match against USA.

Saadane giving nothing away

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Algeria coach Rabah Saadane is remaining tight-lipped over his tactical approach to his side’s FIFA World Cup™ opener against Slovenia in nine days’ time. The north Africans face the European outsiders in Polokwane on 13 June, before coming up against their tougher opponents in Group C – England and then the United States.

Algeria face one final warm-up game against United Arab Emirates in Germany tomorrow, when they will be desperate to end a four-match losing streak. But Saadane said: “All the teams have by now had three weeks or so of preparations. If you look at the results of some of the other African teams, such as Ghana and Cameroon, they have also failed in warm-up games. So, the result of a friendly match is not important, as some think. All I can say is that the team will be ready for the World Cup.”

“When you go to war, you never tell the enemy your plans.”

Rabah Saadane, Algeria coach

Asked about his plans for the clash with Slovenia, he continued: “The 11 players that will start are in my head. But when you go to war, you never tell the enemy your plans. So, it’s the same for me. All I can say is that I know the 11.”

The Algerians have been troubled by injuries in the build-up to the tournament, losing one of their star players, Mourad Meghni, to a knee injury while other important players, such as Madjid Bougherra, Hassan Yebda and Carl Medjani have been struggling with niggles. But ahead of the game with UAE, Saadane added: “I will not take any risk with the injured players.”

Ziani: We’re focused on opening game

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Karim Ziani insists that Algeria are unconcerned about their recent friendly defeats and are completely focused on winning their opening FIFA World Cup™ match against Slovenia on 14 June.

The Desert Foxes, who also have England and the United States in their group, have come in for criticism after four consecutive friendly defeats in the build-up to the finals – the latest against the Republic of Ireland last Friday.

But Wolfsburg playmaker Ziani has defended the team, saying that not too much should be read into those results. The north Africans have one final chance to impress before the tournament begins when they play United Arab Emirates on Saturday.

“I think the most important game is the one against Slovenia,” he told www.competition.dz. “This match against the Emirates will be a preparation match for that game. If we win against the UAE and lose to Slovenia, there is no point.”

Looking back on the 3-0 loss to the Irish and the current run of Rabah Saadane’s team, he added: “We cannot be judged on this game, especially considering that there were some players that had never played together before.

“We also had lots of injuries. I am not particularly worried about these four losses because we didn’t play at full strength. As I said they were just a warm-up game and the most important thing for now is Slovenia. Everyone is highly motivated to make it a good World Cup.”

Zemmamouche final Algerian omission

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Goalkeeper Mohamed Lamine Zemmamouche was the last player cut as Algeria coach Rabah Saadane finalised his 23-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Saadane had just one selection to make after Lazio midfielder Mourad Meghni was forced to withdraw from the 25-man squad that has been preparing in Switzerland and Germany earlier this week.

Algeria suffered a 3-0 defeat in their opening warm-up game against the Republic of Ireland last week and face Saudi Arabia in Nuremberg on Saturday before flying to South Africa.

Algeria will begin their World Cup campaign against Slovenia on 13 June before further matches against USA and England.

Bougherra puts injuries behind him

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Algeria defender Majid Bougherra insists his injury troubles are now just a “bad memory” after returning to normal training for the first time since linking up with his national side in mid-May.

The Rangers centre back, who recently suffered a torn calf as part of an injury-plagued season, was joined by Hassan Yebda and Carl Medjani as the trio resumed regular training with the rest of the squad in Germany.

The Desert Warriors face the United Arab Emirates in their final friendly match in Nuremberg on Saturday ahead of the FIFA World Cup™, where they are scheduled to meet England, USA and Slovenia in Group C.

“I did not feel any pain. I trained normally as I always would with the team. I’m ready for competition again, but I will not take any chances. My injury is a bad memory. Most importantly, I’m ready to play again,” he said.

Algeria lost their previous warm-up match 3-0 against the Republic of Ireland – a match that Bougherra missed. But the 27-year-old insists people should not read too much into the result.

He added: “It was a warm-up game. Forget the loss and think only of what awaits us in the coming days. The meeting with Ireland is a lesson for us. It taught us some important lessons and we will do everything to prepare for the World Cup. What counts most for us is that it will help us rectify some of the problems we may have been having and prepare even better for this World Cup.”
