Skrtel injury ‘not too bad’

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Martin Skrtel is tonight breathing a sigh of relief after learning an ankle injury will not keep him out of the FIFA World Cup™.

The Liverpool defender limped out of Slovakia’s 3-0 friendly win over Costa Rica after only 16 minutes today and was then taken to hospital for scans. But Skrtel has been told he needs only a few days’ rest before he returns.

“It is not too bad, it is just a gash,” said Skrtel. “I think that in a few days it will be okay.”

And Skrtel was also encouraged by his team-mates’ efforts as they brushed Costa Rica aside.

“I saw the second half,” he added. “I think we will have delighted the fans. We wanted to win this match to put ourselves in a good place before the World Cup. We managed that.

“Perhaps the only negative is my injury, because to go off after quarter of an hour is not nice.”

Skrtel faces eights weeks on sidelines

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel will miss most of the rest of the season due to the broken metatarsal he sustained in last week’s UEFA Europa League tie against Unirea Urziceni.

The Reds confirmed that Skrtel would be absent for up to eight weeks because of the injury to his right foot.

Skrtel will not need surgery, Liverpool said on their website, however the recovery process looks set to mean he will be unavailable to manager Rafael Benitez until the end of April.

The 25-year-old Slovakian had to be substituted midway through the second half of Liverpool’s 3-1 Europa League victory in Bucharest.
